Vancouver to Ucluelet by Car:


Via BC Ferries to Nanaimo, BC on Vancouver Island
Choose one of many ferries that travel between Vancouver and Nanaimo throughout the day from either the Horseshoe Bay or Tsawwassen terminals to get to Ucluelet.

BC Ferries – Horseshoe Bay Terminal (West Vancouver)
The Horseshoe Bay Terminal is located in West Vancouver, the westernmost point of the TransCanada Highway #1 on the mainland.  The ferry to Nanaimo takes approximately 1 hour and 35 minutes and arrives at the Departure Bay Terminal in Nanaimo.

BC Ferries – Tsawwassen Terminal (Tsawwassen)
The Tsawwassen Terminal is located south of Vancouver in Tsawwassen.  The ferry to Nanaimo takes approximately 2 hours and arrives at the Duke Point Terminal which is twenty minutes south of Nanaimo.

Driving Directions from Nanaimo to Ucluelet (Approx. travel time – 3 hours)

  1. From either ferry terminal, take Highway 19 and drive North for 43kms (26 miles).
  2. Take Exit 60 to get onto Highway 4 (Pacific Rim Highway) traveling westbound for 156kms (97 miles).  This portion of the drive will take you through historic Cathedral Grove, home to old growth cedars, hemlock, and spruce.  Make sure to take the opportunity to hike the trails of Cathedral Grove.
  3. At Port Alberni, continue driving along Johnston Street until you get to a T-junction.  At the T-junction, turn right to get back onto the Pacific Rim Highway.  Along this scenic drive, you will pass beautiful Sproat Lake and Taylor Arm.
  4. Continue you along the twists and turns of the highway and through the Sutton Pass mountains.  Be sure to keep an eye out for bears that may be fishing in the various creeks and rivers that the highway follows along.
  5. You will then pass by the extraordinary Kennedy Lake, the largest lake on Vancouver Island.  The view is spectacular.
  6. As you continue along the highway, you will approach another T-junction.  Located at the T-junction is the Pacific Rim Visitors’ Centre where you can pick up valuable maps and information about the area.
  7. At the T-junction, turn Left to go to Ucluelet.  Drive for about 7 minutes and you will arrive into the village of Ucluelet.

Vancouver to Ucluelet by Air:


For international air travelers, the nearest international airports are in Vancouver (YVR) on the mainland or Victoria (YYJ) on southern Vancouver Island.  Other major airports on Vancouver Island are Nanaimo Airport (YCD) and Comox Valley Airport (YQQ).  In Ucluelet, the Tofino-Ucluelet Airport (YAZ) has scheduled and charter flights.
